IF

1. BEYOND, WITHIN

I sing electric to the sky
I sing to the orbs in the heavens
I move outwards to the stars like dust
There is more than can be imagined
Beyond, within we see
Many worlds in many galaxies
In many interstellar seas

Beyond, within, we are but one
Look out, look up, we all see the sun

I sing the light years passing by
I sing to the edge of all that can be known
We give we take we all are stardust
We make the journey without moving, moving

Countless stars give endless light
And here are we awakening from night

Beyond, within, we are but one
Look out, look up, we all see the sun

And what does dwell within me
And how does my song come to be
Am I the final meaning
A cosmos self-contained

In infinite creation
Is there a small infinity
A micro-cosmic universe
That sings out to the next

And if we listen to our hearts
The sound the color
Who do we hear
Is it greater are we smaller

We are on the boundary
Of one miracle to another
The vastness of the heavens
And the vastness contained within
Worlds orbit overhead
As we circle one another
And I can see you
I can know you
I can hear you

And who does dwell within me
And who does my song call out to
Who looks into my dreaming
And makes my visions whole

In infinite creation
So many small infinities
Each singing out their own song
Each one a soul to rise up and take flight

2. BEHOLD, THE ZIDDLE

The way you must find
So you stop to read the signs
Don’t be alarmed by the riddles
It’s just the language of the middle

Let the locusts fly
Let the fires rise
Pay no heed to the glaring, mischievous eyes

Silently calling
Afraid of falling
And never looking round
Uncertain backing
Clearly lacking
And drowning in the sound

See the man with the grinning face that never smiles
He’s been watching you back all the while
And thinking thoughts that are just a little sideways

Here comes the parade
In torrential rain,
Just to soothe the commoners
The possessed and insane

Their stomachs are gnawing
They’re ready for clawing
If I linger long
I’ll be butcher’s bait
In the Ziddle’s hands
Is your fate!

What a feature
This odd little creature
Whose efforts appear so vain
There’s things he can’t find
Inside of his mind
That used to make him sane

He has a three-sided dance that’s all the rage
It looks like it’s in reverse
But that’s just because
You can’t see things from his perspective

Through a wintry scene I flee
A murky hollow looms ahead of me
Down I slip and tumble
Torn and bruised I lay humble
Am I lost forevermore
In this dark world

Now I only walk the lonely way
Where all is sadness
How dearly I’d love to pray
Yet all is madness

But I’m realizing I’ve walk this road before
Could it be I’m only dreaming
And nothing more
And if this is indeed merely a nightmare
Then I’m the sole creator of the Ziddle’s lair
Thus will I end his evil world
And a sure pathway home I will unfurl

Down, down, down
That dark road I went just to see
Just to see
Down, down that dark road
I’ve ceased to be me
Yet a light I can see
It’s growing close
Searching for me
How I long to be free
Free at last!
Good morning sunshine!

3. GRACE THE SKIES

Fly free oriole fly, believe
Your time to dream has arrived

In sleepwalking society
A youth questions his role to be
A pillar, puppet a parasite
Get your head on right
As your heart takes flight
If the bird is free to fly
Then why my soul should I deny
If the bird is free to fly
Then why the wings of my soul should I deny
Oh bird of paradise
Let your colors grace the skies
And with courage on your wing
Rejoice freedom’s blessing
Come of age, turn the page
And your cage is
Now opened wide
The beckoning wind is high
You’ve got to soar into the sky
And reach for a better life

Fly free Oriole fly
Believe your time to dream has arrived
Now the time has come to fly, to fly
Fly away

So there I traveled along the guiding stream
Through a deep wooded valley, led within a dream
And just as the sacred tale had foretold
There, the rarest bird in the highest tree
Then it looked down and spoke to me

If the bird is free to fly
Then why your soul should you deny
Oh bird of paradise
Let your colors grace the skies
And with courage on your wing
Rejoice freedom’s blessing

Reach high into the sky
Drifing by
The white dove is ascending
Higher and faster than I’ve ever dared to dream
Fly, fly high, fly free
Carry me on your wing
Carry me home

4. AT LAST WE ARE

Came a sound, from the stillness as the morning woke
Sweetly he sang, yet urgent
I heard his song stronger as the dawn was breaking
There through the mist on eastern hill
So I climbed on

I know I’ve heard that voice
Born upon winds from Eden
I will follow him till heart’s rest
Till at last my journey’s ended

Sing to me a star
Set it in yonder sky
Shining, and guiding me
For I’ve lost my way before
There in the mist on eastern hill
For I would
Climb to the sun and then beyond to
Hear what you might sing
Such was the power of your voice
Oh, that I might hear more

Now it fell upon a summer night
Climbing up the fells in the lingering light
Glimmering yet faint through the gathering mist
Holding forth promises
Brilliantly climbing the sky
Find the singer, chasing starlight
Racing moon beams, onward I climb
He will show me the way

When I draw close he’ll be waiting there
Father of my soul in the morning fair
Then I recall He has never been
Far from my side
Leading me, cheering me
Feeding me, guiding me home

Where I will see familiar faces
And as children who once were lost
Found, at last we are
And free to run and gather ‘round
A shining King, who laughing
Welcomed us home at last
For at last we are
And dancing ‘round our Father
Who wipes away all tears
Welcomes us home at last
Welcomes us home at last

5.
IF THE STARS

Man, just a grain of sand on an island
In a sea of stars

I heard the call to come home
And sweetly, yet urgent as
A mother calls to her wayward son
One who in darkness lingers
Lacking faith I stood rooted
As the darkness wrapped me round she sang

If the stars should then appear
One night in a thousand years
How would man believe and adore
If the light of the city of God was shown there
Would they believe?
If the stars should then appear
One night in a thousand years

This recurring theme beckoned
A song snatched in fragments I heard
Uplifted into infinite space
All as one
The one is all, yes the one, the one is all

On the distant line of the horizon man beholds
Light of his heart as he looks to the sky
He need not question how or why
The perpetual presence of the Higher Mind
In His life, the sublime and the power divine

I watched the morning star burning brightly
I could sense its passion reflected there
In the fire of your eyes

If the stars should then appear
One night in a thousand years
How would man believe and adore
If the light of the city of God was shown there
Would they believe?
If the stars should then appear
One night in a thousand years

The scope of imagination
Searching the dark for a way
Just look to the multitude overhead
All point to the one
The one is all
The power divine
Light of the higher mind
Love, the power divine
Light of the higher mind
Love, the power divine
Yet man still doubts his destiny with God

6. IF THE SUN

Where does this road lead
Where, where in the sunlit sky
Why should I keep running hard
What is the meaning deep
If I thought I heard your name upon the wind I could aspire
If I saw the final line I'd have some fuel to feed the fire
Now I only know here am I

High, high up above me
Where I have no wings to fly
To the earth I'm bound to gravity I am a slave enchained
But I can still chase the wind
If I thought I heard your name upon the wind I could aspire
If I saw the final line I'd have some fuel to feed the fire
Now I need to know who am I

Long search I for little answer
Far I wander yet I never move
Through the distance to the mountain tall I can hear a call but faintly
There's a sound throbbing in my head
I can feel something deep within
It won't leave me, it torments me
It compels me to move ever forward

If I thought I heard your name upon the wind I could aspire
If I saw the final line I'd have some fuel to feed the fire
I just need to know who am I
What am I, why am I

High on a mountain top I woke
Far to the east the morning broke
Far below I saw a land
All was darkness, all was shadow
And yet
Who led me here, who carried me
Away from there
I sensed a presence
A calming spirit watching me
And then I knew
That the darkened land was behind
Never need I return
What I had once thought of as home
Was just a place of gloom and wandering
Sing, sing to me, please sing

Whether I had run away from home
Or merely lost my way
It mattered not, no
For I knew I was close
All would be answered
And my heart would find its rest
For here I find myself at journey’s ending
Sweetly came that song
Growing now and strong
Higher than mountain peak
Everything I would seek
Was waiting there
Home at last, am I found
I am found, I’m found, I’m found, I’m found
If the sun could light a thousand dreams
To carry us away

Whispered on the wind
A call to transcend

Still I’m rooted and fixed as stone
To the ground
One last look back to where I’d been
Bitter sweet, I retreat
Call me weak for I am but Man
A fallen creature bound to earth
This is just a symptom of
Something deep, I can’t break its hold
Thus I weep as the world grows cold yet I hear
Drawing near, singing clear
And I can’t help but turn
You can call it anything that you desire
But I can’t ignore
I am going to make a run for it
Or with broken wings I’ll fly
Hoping he’ll see, hoping he’ll see
This damaged fragment of life
Is struggling homeward at last
I can see it
And it’s beautiful
So at last I return home!

He sang me a song to break
The hardest heart
For I had made mine a stone

If the sun could launch a thousand dreams and carry us away

If I thought I heard your name upon the wind I could aspire
If I saw the final line I'd have some fuel to feed the fire
When at last I heard your song I knew the meaning and broken-hearted
Like a child who lost in darkness finds his way when the sun
At last breaks free

When the morning comes
When at last the sun shines clear
I will hear you singing
That familiar song
That’s haunted me my whole life long
Tugging me relentlessly
Back to where it started
In the gardens of our youth
Where the white dove sings
Where all is wonder, all is cheer
Though I stumble, though I fall
When the morning comes
When at last the sun shines clear
I will hear you singing
I can hear you singing
For it all comes clear in the morning sun
When the morning comes
When at last the sun shines clear
I will hear you singing
When the morning comes
When at last the sun shines clear
I will hear you singing
Yes I will hear you sing
I can hear you
